A core drill, the cutting edge of that consists of a short length of steel tube with one or more notches in the cutting edge. Under the weight of the drill rod, the shots, that are chilled steel balls, are fed down with the water inside the drill rods, and roll under the bit and wear out an annular ring similar to that cut by a diamond drill. Shot drills are limited to vertical holes.
